Statment

The slum in Manila North Cemetery in Philippines has existed for over 70 years since 1950s.This thesis show that the various causes of formation of this cemetery slums the unique ownership inside the cemetery providing initial and incomplete social inclusion for those poor residents,but that was not enough.Because of negative colonial legacy and clownish expulsion policy, it was too hard for them to find opportunities both in rural areas and urban cities. Cemetery provided informal humanitarian assistance for them .The existing environment elements of this cemetery for living needs to be re-examined .
This thesis discusses the alternative understanding of environment elements of cemetery, which may contribute to changing the our stereotype towards extreme living environment of poor people .The thesis also shows other new possibilities of utilization of Manila North Cemetery , as well as the social power of that. The Manila North Cemetery is not always horrific and disconnected from the society , it could also be humane .
