First place of International Design Competition and Constructed Project

Statment

An international design competition was held in the central Chinese city of Wuhan, capital of Hubei province. The competition, initiated by the city government, was to create a memorial park and a suitable setting for a new museum for the newly restored battleship Zhongshan in an existing lake site adjacent to the Yangtze River. The competition was won by Shanghai-based EADG, which was co-designed by Leslie Wood and Bin Jiang. Further concept-refining and design development are currently under way, with particularly attention being given to the interpretation of complex historical issues and the cultural approach required in tackling sensitive and emotive subjects such as war commemoration.
